The spokesman for the governor of Baghlan province, Jawed Basharat, told AFP that the Taliban attack took place in an area controlled by government forces. The attackers were wearing masks, he said. Afghanistan is one of the most mining nations in the world, the result of decades of war. In recent months, Baghlan province has been the scene of violent clashes, sometimes occurring daily in several districts, between government forces and the Taliban. Violence has escalated since May 1, when US forces began a final phase of withdrawal that will be completed on September 11.
