India has reached another new high with 115,736 cases of coronavirus infections reported in the past 24 hours. New Delhi, Mumbai and dozens of other cities are imposing a curfew to try to slow the soaring infections.
The latest increase reported on Wednesday surpassed Sunday’s record of 103,844 infections. The death toll increased by 630 in the past 24 hours, the highest since November, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 166,177 since the pandemic started.
Experts say this increase is partly due to social disregard and increasing wearing of masks in public spaces. The latest surge of infections is worse than last year’s peak of more than 97,000 cases per day in mid-September.
India currently has a seven-day average of more than 78,000 cases per day and has reported 12.8 million viral infections since the pandemic began, the highest after the United States and Brazil.
