CHICAGO (AP) – Jake Arrieta delivered. Eric Sogard scored in a daring dribble. Jason Heyward sets up another run with a nifty slide.
On another difficult night at the plate, Chicago Cubs played just enough to win.
Arrieta productive five inning on Tuesday and Craig Kimbrel escaped a jam situation in the ninth inning, sending the Cubs to a 3-1 victory first Mets.
“Winning is really great when we have to get rid of some shots,” said manager David Ross.
Arrieta (3-1) allows one run and three hits, four hits and three go. Wearing short sleeves on a clear, cool evening – the match time temperature is 36 degrees – he also contributed to the two run for the board.
“Was fought, did a great job in limiting the damage,” said Arrieta. “There have been some moves in there, but there is still competition throughout.”
Sogard took two shots, scored twice and drove in one run to help Chicago recover from a 13-4 loss to Atlanta on Sunday. Sogard was included in the squad when David Bote was scratched with a stomachache.
Cubs hit only four times and beat 12 times, including four for Javier Báez. Plagued by an early attack incident, defending champions NL Central won only three of their last nine games.
“Do the little things, try to get through some laps, we did it tonight,” said Ross.
JD Davis scored for New York, but also committed two throws in third place – including one that brought Chicago home a first time. The Mets team won 5/6.
Taijuan Walker (0-1) has been in top form for his career with six walks in 3 2/3 innings, then sent off by John Libka as he expressed disappointment at the attacking area the referee’s work when he leaves the match. Walker has been counted with two earned runs and two hits.
“After that third inning, I almost lost my sense of the attack area and was barely gone,” Walker said.
Mets’ second year coach Luis Rojas was also kicked out by Libka after Michael Conforto was eliminated in the sixth match. It was the first time in Rojas’ career.
“The only thing you ask for is consistency. So that’s where it came from, ”said Rojas. “Personally I think Taijuan was a bit pinched by the home team’s referee, and I think we got calls out of the area.”
After Arrieta departed, Rex Brothers, Brandon Workman and Andrew Chafin combined for three innings before Kimbrel worked a shaky ninth for his fourth save.
With a sortie and the bases filled, Kimbrel defeated Brandon Nimmo and defeated Francisco Lindor on a first chance.
Sogard used his feet to put Chicago on the board in the third inning. He took the lead and advanced Arrieta’s sacrifice on Walker 0-2.
Willson Contreras scored a two-point kick for Davis in third place, and he skipped his shot past the diamond. Sogard continued to run and score without a throw as the ball went from first team player Pete Alonso.
The Cubs went on to hit two more after Walker regained the first two in the fourth inning. Single Heyward, slipped second with a smooth slide and scored on Sogard’s pad in the middle. Three consecutive walks, including one to Arrieta, create another run and chase Walker.
The Mets challenged Heyward’s first stealing of the season, but the most recent appeal has been put on hold.
Mets adjusted their rotation this week, giving Jacob deGrom another day of rest. The 32-year-old deGrom is expected to start Thursday with the Cubs, but twice-winner NL Cy Young has been moved back into Friday’s home game against Nationals. Now, left-hand Joey Lucchesi comes on Thursday after he worked three innings in New York’s 7-2 defeat to Colorado in Saturday’s doubles match.
Cubes: First junior coach Craig Driver returned to his usual duties. He came out after he tested positive for COVID-19.
Left-handed David Peterson (1-1, 6.30 ERA) and right-hand Zach Davies (1-2, 10.32) of the Cubs came on Wednesday night. Peterson is in a stellar performance against Philadelphia, scoring 10 out of six in a 5-1 win. Davies dropped the last two starting sets, allowing 11 runs in 5 2/3 innings.
