“Because terracotta pots are so porous, the plants thrive in the material more than they want to look like enameled porcelain,” Street said. “The roots really like the airflow. They don’t want to be confined and sometimes glazed pottery restricts that airflow. Plants grow very well in terracotta because they are natural materials. Soil, roots and plants themselves are only better adapted to the environment they are, not as a man-made product. “
And because almost all terracotta pots have drainage, adding too much water is even more difficult. “If you want to be a good plant parent with healthy plants, you need a drainage system as a proper drainage hole,” Street said. “And terracotta, that’s just the standard in terracotta pots.”
When watering your plants, Street says to simply water the soil around the stump until the water runs through the bottom and into the plate. “Once the water fell on that plate, you know ‘Okay, I gave it a lot of water,’ she said. Allow the plant to drink all the excess water and if there is still water on the plate after an hour or two, that means it is enough and you can pour away the excess. As long as you water the plants no more than every 7 to 10 days, when using terracotta pots you won’t have to worry about using too much water.
“There are so many pretty potted plants these days, but they weren’t made by growers,” Street said. “I’ve been doing this for 15, 16 years and terracotta pots are the best. Absolutely the best. “
