SPRING VALLEY, NY (CBSNewYork) – A large fire broke out overnight in a residential nursing home Rockland County.
Firefighters were called around 1:30 am to arrive at the Evergreen Adult Courthouse on Lafayette Street in Spring valley.
CBS2’s Christina Fan spoke to a group of community volunteers who overheard the radio call and arrived at the scene in front of the fire department. They got into action, kicking some old people out and carrying others.
“Over there [were] a lot of good Samaritans here, probably eight of them, ran into the building and [brought] witness Hershy Green told Fan that they can either sit in wheelchairs or walkers or pick them up and take them out of danger.
“Then seeing their premises, their home sinking in flames, was something really sad,” added Green.
Most assisted living facilities, with about 200 beds, are a complete loss. Not only did some parts of the building collapsed, witnesses said they heard an explosion inside and a lucky day call from firefighters.
The volunteers were concerned they wouldn’t reach all of the people and said people might still be trapped inside. So far, there is no information about the number of people injured.
