NEW YORK (CBSNewYork / AP) – Pavel Buchnevich Celebrate his birthday with his first career hat trick and New York Ranger defeat New Jersey Devil 6-3 on Saturday for their third win over their Hudson River rivals in five days.
Artemi Panarin had one goal and three assists and Ryan Strome got one goal and one assist in the first game to return three goals as Rangers improved to 12-4-3 in 19 games. the most recent of them.
The question after a quick start is whether rookie Igor Shesterkin will be able to play for the third time in a row. The Russian’s final streak was halted in the 152th minute, 37 seconds when Michael McLeod scored after recovering in the second half.
New Jersey then took a 4-3 lead as PK Subban and Yegor Sharangovich scored in 64 seconds in the third half with teams playing 4 on 4 to take a one-goal lead. However, Buchnevich and Chris Kreider added more goals in the empty net at the end of the game to seal the victory.
The win extended Rangers’ streak to the top five of the season (4-0-1) and dragged them in a four-point round against idle Boston in the race for the final playoff place in the East. Rangers have 12 games left in their regular season, two less than Bruins.
Shesterkin ended with 30 saves. Aaron Dell has 24 saves for the Reds, who have lost 5 matches in a row and the score is 1-7-2 in the last 10 matches.
Buchnevich, 26, opened fire and scored three goals. He finished off a quirky rush with Mika Zibanejad, who made three assists, with a shot into the open net at 7:26. The next two goals came in power play after Damon Severson was called up to draw and New Jersey was called on by too many players on penalties. Strome scored from a bad angle in the 5-on-3 segment, and Buchnevich got the second, shooting from between the circles.
Panarin, who now had 301 assists in his career, soon made it 4-0 in the second half following a shot through Dell’s gloves.
