Chicharito Nets Hat Trick, Galaxy Down Red Bulls – CBS New York

CARSON, Calif. (CBSNewYork / AP) – Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez extended his horrifying start to the Major League Soccer season with a hattrick, and LA Galaxy beat it out. New York Red Bulls Sunday evening 3-2.

The Mexican star has 5 goals in 2 games for the Galaxy after having only 2 goals in 12 games last year in his first season of injury in the MLS. He along with Brian Ching of Houston (2006) are the only players in the tournament history to have 5 goals in the first two matches of the season.

It was Chicharito’s first three-goal match since 2016, when he performed it in the German Bundesliga for Leverkusen against Mainz. This is also the first time he has scored many goals in head-to-head matches since 2017.

Andrew Gutman and Cristian Cásseres Jr scored for the Red Bulls, who dropped both of their matches.

This is the first time since 2012 that Galaxy has won its first two games.

Both of Chicharito’s goals in Galaxy’s April 18 win over Miami came in the second half. He started early at LA’s home opener. He put Galaxy ahead in the ninth minute touching the ball after Ethan Zubak’s shot was partially blocked as he tried to get the ball down the post.

Gutman set the score at 1-1 in the 26th minute when he received a pass from Brian White and sent the ball to the post of LA goalkeeper Jonathan Bond.

Chicharito put the Galaxy ahead 15 minutes later when he took a cross from Victor Vazquez inside the box and finished with his left foot in the center of the net and past New York goalkeeper Carlos Coronel.

Chicharito completed a hattrick in the 60th minute with a right-footed slick in front of goal after Red Bulls failed to clear the ball. He was substituted after 78 minutes.

New York took a 3-2 lead after Cásseres’s header in the 63rd minute. Red Bulls had several chances to take the lead, including Daniel Royer’s shot in stoppage time.

Red Bulls had the 14-7 advantage in shots and shots towards the goal (6-5).
