Economic downturn and age discrimination: Economy


Globally, countries are experiencing an increase in the size and proportion of older people in their population, leading to a ‘gray’ workforce. These older workers often experience discrimination in the workplace. This column uses two unique data sources and two new statistical approaches to show that the economic downturn increases illegal age discrimination. Whatever power disparity exists between worker and employer appears to increase during the recession, allowing employers to engage in higher levels of discrimination.
