How to create a YouTube community tab [+ How to Use It]

How to create a community tab on YouTube

To get the Communities tab on YouTube, your channel needs to have more than 1000 subscribers, and it can take up to a week after surpassing that number to see the Communities tab appear.

Note that if your channel has more than 1000 subscribers, but the Community tab option isn’t visible on your channel yet, you’ll need to enable custom channel layouts to show tabs.

How to create a YouTube Community post

Once you have access to the Community tab, it’s time to start posting and interacting with your audience. Creating a post is very simple and similar to posting on any other social media feed.

To create a Community post:

  1. Sign in to YouTube.
  2. At the top of the page, select ‘Upload’ and then select ‘Create post.’
  3. Enter a message to create a text post, or choose to add a video, poll, gif or image to the post. You can also refer to other channels with the @ symbol followed by the channel name.
  4. Click ‘Post.’

Once your post is published, your subscribers will see it in their feed. They may also get a notification that you’ve posted new content.

Where is the YouTube Community tab?

You can find each Creator Community tab on their home page, if they have this enabled.

On the desktop, click the channel name to go to the channel’s home page.

From there, click Community in the middle of the screen. Here, you’ll find all of their most recent posts, where you can comment on and interact with them.

On mobile, you’ll need to use the official YouTube app to see the Community tab, as it won’t show up in the mobile browser. Once you’ve opened YouTube, visit the channel’s home page. You should be able to click the Community tab on top of them.

7 ways to use the YouTube Community tab

Don’t be too focused on replying to all comments on your channel, but taking the time to memorize and respond to some of the comments will indicate that you are paying attention.

3. Pin a top comment.

When a comment really gets you excited, it’s from a VIP or just something you want to promote, you can pin it to the top of the comments. This will be the first thing other viewers will see when they view your community posts.

4. A video ad collaborating with another creator.

Were you really a YouTuber until you collaborated with another creator? Once you’ve uploaded your shared work, make sure that you both post about it on your Community tab. It’s a great way to drive more traffic to your channel and expand your audience.

5. Poll your audience about the type of video they want to see next.

Find out what your audience wants from your channel. Ask them for feedback on your upcoming videos or poll their opinion on an upcoming contest.

6. Advertise with fans or other creators using @mention.

Mention a fan or other creator to share your love with or get more eyes on your video. Popular channels will usually pick a fan to thank at the end of their videos. The Community tab is another place where you can make these connections.

7. Share posts ‘for members only’.

If you offer Channel memberships (paid subscription to your channel where “viewers pay monthly in exchange for exclusive badges, custom emojis and other perks”), you can choose to create exclusive posts for your channel members.

This is a great way to thank them for their support and give them even more opportunities to interact with your channel.

One of the things I noticed when trying to find an example for this post was that many creators weren’t using the Community tab’s full potential.

The power of being able to post updates and notify subscribers is enormous! You have an engaging audience, so make sure to update them regularly, even if you don’t have time to upload the entire video.
