Silicones are very complex. Technically, silicon is inherently not bad. The silicon has linear cycles, like dimethicones or your MFA code, is Not dangerous to human health and the environment.
However, some brands avoid them altogether because they don’t really take a health-oriented point of view – in skincare, they make the cream feel pleasant and supple; In hair care, they provide a surface coating around the strands of hair and create a feeling of smoothness and shine. But they provide no nutrients or moisture, and they do tend to get on the hair and skin.
“So it changes the user behavior in a really interesting way,” noted Engler. “If you are using a hair conditioner that contains dimethicone, it will not rinse your hair so easily, and then you have to be extremely aggressive when washing your hair.” Same for the skin: “If you were using a face cream that had one of these silicones, you would have to be very active to get rid of it, otherwise it all wouldn’t go away, and then it can clog pores, ”Engler adds.
However! There is a type of nonlinear silicon, called cyclic silicon, that actually builds up in our waterways. Some examples are cyclotetrasiloxane (D4), cyclopentasiloxane (D5), cyclohexasiloxane (D6), and cyclomethicone.
