Football is the world’s most popular sport, with at least 3.5 billion fans globally.

A decision earlier this month by 12 elite European clubs to take part in a new tournament, Super League, has caused shock waves around the world.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid are part of the breakaway league.

Each club was promised a share of the 3.5 billion euro ($ 4.2 billion) funding provided by investment bank JP Morgan.

European football governing UEFA and FIFA, world football governing body, have threatened to ban clubs and their players and penalize them. After backlash from fans, players, regulators and government, all six English clubs, Spanish club Atletico Madrid and Italian club Inter Milan and AC Milan plug out of the competition, which put the future of the Super League in doubt.

The biggest sport in the world

Played almost anywhere, football is the most popular sport in the world. FIFA estimates that nearly 3.5 billion people, representing nearly half the planet, watched the 2018 World Cup in Russia – the most of any sporting event.

Below is a map showing the most popular sports for each country. Popularity is measured by a combination of several factors, including viewership, number of players, public interest and local media coverage.

Soccer tournaments around the world

FIFA, the 116-year-old sports federation, is headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland and manages six continental federations including national and club federations.

The top leagues on each continent are called the Champions League or the Copa Libertadores in South America. The top teams from each of their respective sub-leagues compete once a year for their continent’s prestigious trophy. Europe’s UEFA Champions League pays the highest prize money for a football club tournament of 19 million euros ($ 23 million).

South American Copa Libertadores paid its championship team $ 15 million, followed by Asia’s AFC Champions League winners ($ 4 million), Africa’s CAF Champions League ($ 2.5 million North and Central America CONCACAF Championship ($ 500,000) and Oceania’s OFC Champions League round up their winning team with a $ 75,000 bonus.

The most valuable clubs

According to data from Forbes’ soccer Valuation list, all 20 most valuable club teams in the world are based in Europe. The 20 richest teams are worth more than $ 45 billion. Spanish club rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid are estimated to be worth at least $ 4.75 billion each. All 12 teams registered to join the Super League are among the 20 richest teams in the world.

The most expensive players

Of the 20 most valuable players, 15 from teams have entered the Super League. Currently, the club’s most expensive player in the world, Kylian Mbappe, plays for French club Paris Saint Germain. The 22-year-old center-back is worth $ 176 million according to the football website Transfermarkt.
