In a statement on Saturday, Biden became the first US president to officially recognize the killing of 1.5 million Armenians in the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1917 as an act of “genocide.”
Turkey acknowledged the Armenian death in the Ottoman Empire during World War I, but firmly denied that the murders were systematically staged and constituted a genocide.
Biden’s statement came in the middle stressful relationship between the US and Turkey, previously warned that the recognition of the murders as genocide would further damage relations between NATO allies.
