AUGUSTA, Ga. (Reuters) – Rory McIlroy said he is learning more about his rotation with his new instructor so he can identify and fix problems during matches on his own.

Ten years after squandering a 54-hole lead at the Masters, and with some other opportunities quashed, McIlroy returned to Augusta National for the only professional tournament he hadn’t yet won.

Due to a number of recent inconsistencies, legitimate questions are surrounding whether his game is quite enough to compete for Sunday’s Blue Jacket.

The Northern Irishman recently turned to venerable English instructor Pete Cowen in a bid to find his way back to the top.

“He’s knowledgeable and very wise … That’s why I brought him in,” McIlroy said of Cowen.

“It’s basically just trying to understand body movements a bit better and understand why certain shots happen and how to fix those movements while in flight.”

McIlroy rejected a suggestion that he had become too bogged down with technical thinking, saying that in fact it was the exact opposite and that he simplified everything.

“When you don’t understand why you hit certain shots, you can get lost and you can start thinking of all kinds of things,” he said.

“I feel like every time I go to scope, I’m trying something different.”

At 31, McIlroy could no longer assume he would have many chances to win the Masters, though it’s best to avoid thinking about it lest it add to further internal pressure.

It won’t be easy with names like Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Thomas and defending champion Dustin Johnson, but no one doubts that McIlroy in his best form can beat anyone coming on Sunday. He just needs to thread 72 holes together.

“I’ve played very good rounds on this golf course before, but not four in a row,” he said.

“It was a challenge for me and, if I could do that and get my head in the right position and feel my game right where it should be, then I have no doubt that I can pull it off. put it all together. “
