Learn from high frequency diaries: Economics


The COVID-19 pandemic means that more and more people are working from home and women are losing their adequately paid jobs. This column uses the daily activity log from the US Time Use Survey to review the impact of the Great Depression’s unemployment benefit extension on hours worked from home. The big picture is the rise in gender inequality in the labor market, with women rather than men increasing working hours and efforts to cope with the Great Depression and consequential changes period of enjoying unemployment benefits.
