Montana: “Gianforte signs Election Day registration elimination bill, tightens voter ID”

KTVH:

Republican Governor Greg Gianforte on Monday signed two bills removing voter registration on Election Day in Montana and tightening ID requirements for voting and voter registration.

Gianforte, along with the sponsors of the bill and Republican Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen, who was in favor of the measures, signed them into law at the Capitol.

“These new laws will help ensure the continuing integrity of Montana elections for many years to come,” he said in a statement.

“Montana sets the standards for national elections,” said Jacobsen. However, there is always room for improvement and voter ID and voter registration deadlines are best practices for protecting the integrity of elections. “

Opponents of the two bills claim that they are nothing more than oppression of voters, making it harder for Montanans to vote or register to vote. They note that the law advocates did not present evidence of any voter fraud or problems with Montana’s previous system.
