Like us, dogs are emotionally complex, and they can easily become bored and depressed. Some dogs are more emotionally sensitive than others, but in general, dogs get along well with their humans. Their general mood can be affected by changes in the home, and they may even react to our emotions. Dr. Tory Waxman, a small animal veterinarian and co-founder of the dog food brand for humans on Sunday, notes, “Mental and physical nourishment is essential. healthy dog. Dogs are social and active creatures. And although different dog breeds and individuals have different needs, all dogs thrive when their needs are met physically and mentally. ”
When dogs don’t get enough physical or mental stimulation, they can easily become bored. Not sure if your dog is bored? Dr. Waxman explains that “like humans, dogs can express their boredom in very different ways.” She notes that when bored, “Some dogs become anxious and begin to walk, chew, whine, bark or become focused on certain things (such as cars, shadows, etc). ” On the other hand, “Other dogs may behave slightly back and become quiet, unable to come out of the cage, loss of appetite or appear to be disinterested in activities that were once enjoyable and enjoyable”. Dogs can get depressed for a variety of reasons that have nothing to do with their overall physical health (though always rule that out first with your veterinarian). Including:

Your stress – While dogs can be great emotional support for humans when they’re in trouble, sometimes our moods can also affect our dogs. If you are having trouble or are particularly stressed because of work or home, your anxiety can affect your dog, causing his or her mood to drop drastically.
Lack of stimulation / mental enrichment – Dogs are intelligent species that need the opportunity to use their mind. While different dogs will have different needs or abundance, all dogs need mental stimulation. A lack of attachment or mental stimulation can quickly lead to depression or irritability in your dog.
Lack of Exercise / Activity – As with us, sitting around can be fun during a day or a weekend, but not getting enough exercise or physical activity over time can cause depression. The same is true for dogs. All dogs, regardless of age or breed, need exercise; Not getting enough exercise can make dogs bored and affect their overall emotional health.
Process changes – When we started the pandemic lock, many dogs lost access to activities that were previously a regular part of their schedule. For my dog this meant being able to no longer hang out on the river or the beach; for other dogs this may look like it is no longer possible to go to doggie nursery or other fun outing.

While some dogs may be satisfied with a quick walk around the block, others may require miles of walking or running to keep them happy. Even dogs that don’t require hourly exercise benefit from mental stimulation, including tip training and fun games to stimulate their brains.
Grooming / Massage
You know how when you cut your hair, take a bath or take a long saliva bath, you feel so much better? The same may be true for your dog! Grooming becomes a regular part of your daily or weekly routine is a great way to spend quality time with your dog, which can therefore improve your dog’s mood. . Also, keeping the dog’s coat clean, carpet-free, and clipping will help with the overall mood.
Incorporate a massage into the brushing process to make your dog feel more special. Take 10 minutes a day to groom and massage. Good places to massage: ears, neck, chest, abdomen and legs.
One of the best ways to add mental enrichment to your dog is to teach him some new tricks. Trick training is a great mental (and sometimes physical) exercise for your dog. Great tricks to try out are crawling, knitting, putting toys away or spinning, jumping high and making a wish. (See above dogster.com). Reward your dog for a job well done with a snack or play with a toy!
Refresh basic skills
Basic skills such as loose rope riding, Sitting, Down, Coming and Leaving it will become gritty if you don’t practice them regularly with your dog. For added fun, leash your dog and grab some of your dog’s favorites and practice or take a basic refresher training class. Practicing the basics can help stimulate your dog, but it also makes it easier for you to take your dog out for more places, which equates to confidence and boosts both of you mood.
A great way to break the boredom of the house is to give your dog dog food puzzles to solve. These puzzles are designed for dogs to use their noses, mouths and feet to manipulate puzzles to reveal treats! Find quizzes about dog food in all pet retail websites and stores. Note: If you have multiple dogs, use the puzzle for one dog at a time, in a room that other dogs cannot reach. If you have a resource guard dog, only use the puzzle when the dogs are separated. Pick up the puzzle, clean it and put it away after use so as not to cause a loss of resources.
Dance with your dog!
Dancing with a dog (also known as dancing freely to music or dancing to music) is a real sport where people practice routines combining tricks and practicing running to the music. This is an amazingly rich activity to participate in, and it’s also fun to randomly play around the house. Turn on your favorite tunes, get some gifts to reward your dog and be silly! As you jump around, ask your dog to do some of its favorite tricks or see if they’re interested and start improvise and come up with tricks with you. Parkour (sometimes referred to as urban agility) is both a competitive dog sport and an enjoyable activity that you and your dog might come across. With parkour, the world around you will become an obstacle for you and your dog. While walking, look for natural obstacles such as rocks, logs, playground drums, picnic benches, etc. that you and your dog can join. Examples of parkour skills can be jumping or climbing, placing two or four feet on different obstacles, as well as walking under or around obstacles. Your daily BOOST
It’s easy to raise your dog’s mood (and your own) every day in 10-minute increments. Here is the recommended itinerary:
Morning walk: Take at least 20 minutes for you and your dog to move. Let him sniff for a boost.
Mid-Morning Cue review: Take 5 to 10 minutes to quickly update basic skills: Sit, Stay, Lie / Down, Come, Drop / Leave. (If you work away from home, just add this to your morning walking routine.)
Happy afternoon: Time to boost your spirits with some small tip training or food quizzes. Again, this should only take around 10 to 15 minutes. (If you work away from home, add this to your after-work routine.)
Before dinner: Time to spend about 10 minutes greeting or playing with your dog. This is a great time to touch the base and get you both relaxed and in a good mood.
Dinner time: Instead of feeding your dog with a regular bowl, use a food puzzle game to stimulate your mood.
Evening relaxation: This is a good time to have a good time with your dog. You can also incorporate rating hints or training tips at this time. Or, if your dog gets older or the weather is bad, try a game like Hide-and-Seek or What’s Under the Cup.
Relax before bed: Set aside 10 minutes for a grooming session. Brush your teeth quickly, and check your feet and elsewhere for any concerns. After that, finish with a cat and dog massage.
Weekly sports: Register you and your dog for a class! Agility, dexterity, parkour, coursing and dog dance are all fun sports played with a dog to strengthen the bond and elevate the two’s moods. If you don’t feel like going out, set up your own backyard agility course.
