Attackers carried out yesterday in villages in the Tahoua region of Niger left 137 people dead. The government announced this on Monday. The number of victims made these attacks the most terrible massacre ever to have ever happened in Niger. A local official said armed men rode motorbikes and attacked three villages near the border with Mali, shooting “anything that moves”. Government spokesman Zakaria Abdourahamane said: “By systematically viewing civilians as targets, these armed robbers have taken a step closer to terror and brutality.” The government has declared three days of national mourning. The world’s poorest country, according to the United Nations development rankings, is also forced to grapple with the attacks of jihadis from Mali and Nigeria.
