NEW YORK (CBSNewYork / AP) – Bernie MadoffThe infamous financier who pleaded guilty to the greatest Ponzi conspiracy in history, died in federal prison.
A law enforcement official confirmed Madoff’s death with CBS News. It was first reported by the Associated Press.
Madoff died at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, North Carolina, apparently of natural cause.
Last year, Madoff’s lawyers filed for the court papers trying to get him 82 years old to be released from prison inside COVID-19 pandemic, say he was end stage kidney disease and other chronic diseases. The request was denied.
In 2019, Madoff’s lawyers also asked the former President Donald Trump to get a reduced sentence. No one was given.
Madoff admitted to defrauding thousands of customers out of billions of dollars invested over decades.
Court-appointed trustee yes recovered over $ 13 billion out of an estimated total of $ 17.5 billion that investors put into Madoff’s business. At the time of his arrest, fake account statements were telling clients they had $ 60 billion in assets.
