ROOSEVELT, NY (CBSNewYork) – Police are looking for a little girl seen wandering alone on Long Island.
A woman first spotted her around 10:30 pm Tuesday at a gas station near Nassau Road and East Greenwich Avenue in Roosevelt. She tried to approach her, but the girl ran away.
Police later received reports that she was seen walking across a bridge on Southern State Parkway, and then entered a wooded area on Nassau Road. Officers can be seen walking through the trees, and they carry a K-9 unit and a police helicopter.
Authorities believe the girl is between 7 and 10 years old. She wears a striped T-shirt, pink pajamas, large earrings, and no shoes.
“My heart is for that kid and his parents, because we need to know why he’s there,” resident Pamela Grant told CBS2.
“I mean, you don’t know, she can get hit by a car, she can be kidnapped, you don’t know what could happen,” said resident Mavelette Hayden.
Police worked with school officials in the area to find out who the girl was, hoping a neighbor or family friend would recognize her and call the police.
Anyone with information is required to call the Nassau County Police for the first time for detectives or crime detectors at 1-800-244-TIPS.
