Queens Teen Thank You Doctors at Long Island Hospital, where COVID treatment ‘The Last Resort’ saved her life – CBS New York

NEW HYDE PARK, NY (CBSNewYork) – With COVID-19 Cases are still on the rise among young people, there’s a serious story from Long island.

CBS2’s Carolyn Gusoff reported on Monday, a teenager who said she was in the “threshold of death” had returned to the hospital that saved her life to warn others that the pandemic was not over.

Karla Duarte expressed gratitude outside Cohen Children’s Hospital after fully recovering from COVID, which was a long shot.

A year ago, Queens High school students are among the sickest. Her lungs were damaged and she was on mechanical ventilation.

“I am a young person. I had no health condition before I got COVID, so I was really shocked, “Duarte said.” I almost died of COVID. It was painful to hear the words because I was only 16 years old. ” .


Doctors tried the last resort – it had never been used before on a child with it Coronavirus: an ECMO machine, which filters carbon dioxide from the body’s bloodstream and replenishes oxygen.

Dr. James Schneider said: “Her body is based on an artificial lung, basically, I think it’s been almost 10 days… without it she wouldn’t be able to survive.

“It’s becoming more common now for COVIDs that don’t respond to first-line therapies like ventilators and medications,” said Dr. Todd Sweberg.

It worked. On April 19, 2020, Karla recovered from COVID respiratory failure. Her story is a testament to how young people are at risk.


“One of the things we have to do is dispel the myth that children are immune to the disease. We see a lot of kids who are very sick, we have COVID kids in the ICU, ”said Dr. Schneider.

Karla is currently fully vaccinated and looks forward to pursuing a career in respiratory health.

“There will never be enough words or actions that I can thank the entire staff here,” she said. “A lot of people have dedicated themselves to this miracle.”
