PImage this: You get out of bed to prepare for the new day and head over to the refrigerator to start the morning with a healthy breakfast. You open the fridge door open and get your morning yogurt, and all of a sudden, when you peel off the foil, you’re faced with a puddle of liquid and the question: stirring or not? Should you spill it out? Is it because your yogurt has been split? Try not to go into an existential crisis, because we already have the answers.
Nutritionist Lori Zanini, RD, CDE, creator For the love of diabetes begging you not to throw it away, as you can strip away some of the essential nutrients (and fail yourself when it comes to the texture of the yogurt). Step far from the sink!
For the beginners, this “yogurt water ” has a name. “The liquid above yogurt is called acid whey,” explains Zanini. “There’s no need to pour it out before eating your yogurt, as whey has beneficial nutrients and helps enhance the creamy texture of the yogurt.” So this not only adds nutritional value, but also enhances the taste and feel of gut snacks.
What exactly are those nutrients? “Whey contains some calcium, protein, potassium and lactose,” says Zanini. As you probably know, women have a higher risk of calcium deficiency (hypocalcemia), so it’s important to get it where you can, and towards potassium, this Electrolytes Essential for your blood pressure, heart rate, muscle function and nervous system. Protein is also extremely valuable to our bodies (and muscles!), And yogurt also tends to be a rich source of this substance.
If you want to follow Zanini’s recommendation on what to do with your acid whey, it’s this: Don’t spill it out, just stir it all together into a delicious, velvety blend. She says that while it does give a more creamy texture, in fact, it doesn’t change the taste at all. The only reason to throw this liquid nutrient? If you don’t like the look of it, feel a bit silly. If you really can’t take it and you won’t change your mind in any way, Zanini is here again to save today. She says just switch to the yogurt you’re buying. “If you don’t like the liquid above yogurt, look for Greek yogurt,” Zanini recommends. “Getting rid of whey has many difficulties, that’s why it’s thicker.” Whatever you choose, just know that the liquid on top of your yogurt is harmless, and may even be beneficial.
