PHILADELPHIA (CBSNewYork / AP) – Nick Leddy scored after 2:23 in extra time and Ilya Sorokin made 30 saves to lift New York Islanders 1-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday night.

After both goalkeepers have excelled throughout the competition, Leddy netted a stunning goal as his backhand pass went through the slide of defender Flyers Travis Sanheim and over the foot of goalkeeper Brian Elliott.

Victory led the Islanders to overtake Pittsburgh Penguins for second place in the East Division. New York is less than first place is Washington two points.

Elliott made 27 saves, including some excellent at the end of the third half.

Philadelphia 10 points behind Boston for the final playoff spot in the East.

This is the sixth of eight games in the season series in which the game has gone over-regulation.

Jordan Eberle and Jean-Gabriel Pageau assisted the winner in the game, ending a lingering goalless drought. The Islanders have not scored since the start of the second half two games ago, around 159 minutes and 27 seconds of the match.

Sorokin improved to 5-0-1 in six games, five of which were starting games, against the Flyers. He helped The Islanders go on to play with 23 saves in the first two stages, including some quality opportunities. His glove strike to Travis Konecny’s great chance was the highlight of the second installment, following a number of strong stops towards the end of the first installment that also included denial of Konecny.

The Islanders discovered their offense at the end of the third season, but this time Elliott completed the mission.

After a fine save for Casey Cizikas, Elliott turned down Kyle Palmieri with a glove save at 7:11 in time and blocked Andy Greene’s slap 31 seconds later.

Both goalkeepers were excellent in stoppage time, with Sorokin using his cushion to deny Ivan Provorov 23 seconds in extra time and Elliott keeping Brock Nelson a brilliant save.

AWARDS OSKAR

The Flyers honored Oskar Lindblom on Cancer Hockey Night in Philadelphia. Lindblom, diagnosed with cancer in December 2019, returned to play two games late last season after receiving treatment and recently revealed that he does not have cancer.

During the figure skating competition, Lindblom made a tour of the rink on his own, something usually reserved for rookie debutants. And his Flyers teammates all wore Lindblom’s number 23 jerseys in warmups. He received a huge applause when introduced.
