A wildfire raging on the slopes of Cape Town’s Table Mountain has spread to the University of Cape Town, burning the history library on campus and forcing students to evacuate on Sunday.
Orange flames lit the windows of the library, which contained substantial book archives and collections while the firefighters sprayed water jets to put out the flames. At least two floors of the Jagger Library have been burnt, according to local reports.
Other buildings on the campus caught fire, and a nearby historic windmill caught fire.
More than 100 firefighters and emergency personnel have been deployed to the university campus and to Nui Ban National Park. Four helicopters were used to drop water over threatened areas, officials said.
A firefighter has been injured and is being treated at a hospital, according to the Cape Town fire and rescue agency.
Charlotte Powell, the spokesperson for the city’s center for disaster risk management, said residents were on alert.
