Harrison, NJ (AP) – Gadi Kinda and Daniel Salloi each scored in the second half, and Sporting Kansas City beat them New York Red Bulls 2-1 on Saturday night in the opening match of the season for both teams.
Kinda fired a penalty in the 59th minute. Salloi shot his right foot from close range in the center of the goal a minute later.
Caden Clark, 17-year-old Red Bulls, in the sights of European clubs, scored from the center of the 18-yard box into the top right corner of the net in the 48th minute. Clark was on the pitch in 8 matches and scored 3 goals last season for Red Bulls.
Sporting has scored in 5 of their last 7 visits to the Red Bull Arena since 2012, with 4 wins. The teams haven’t met each other during the 2020 season. Their last meeting was on April 14, 2019, a 2-2 draw at the Children’s Mercy Park.
Sporting has 15 season opener wins since the start of the 1996 MLS campaign, the most in the league. Sporting also had 10 league lead wins in their opening matches. However, Red Bulls are still the team with the best 16-5-5 scores in the league in their opening matches at home.
It was Gerhard Struber’s regular season coach debut against the Red Bulls. Struber coached Red Bulls in the play-offs last season after being hired in October to replace Chris Armas.
