Authorities warned residents to avoid coastal areas as the storm was expected to make landfall on Saturday night.

Tanzania authorities have warned residents to avoid coastal areas as the country prepares for the impending landing of Tropical Storm Jobo.

The Tanzania Meteorological Agency said the storm was expected to make landfall on Saturday night, but weakening wind speeds would reduce the first expected impact.

Previously, the agency estimated that Jobo would reach wind speeds between 50 and 60 km (31 and 37 miles) per hour when it reached the national coast of East Africa.

Tropical Storm Jobo is expected to still bring heavy rainfall and is likely to flood, with rainfall between 200 and 400 mm expected to happen within 24 hours of it making landfall, the agency said.

The storm is expected to affect the Zanzibar archipelago as well as the Mafia Island. Forecasts say, Tanzania’s economic capital Dar es Salaam will also be affected by inclement weather.

Agnes Kijazi, director general of the Tanzania Meteorological Agency, said: “Such weather phenomena tend to attract huge clouds from the Congo forests, so we expect rainfall to increase. in the western regions of the country in the next few days ”

On Friday, Tanzania asked fishermen to avoid going out to sea off Dar es Salaam and the area south of Mtwara.

“For the fishermen carrying out their operations, especially on the south coast from Dar es Salaam to Mtwara, it is important for them to take precautions by stopping and waiting until the storm goes away. over, ”Kijazi told reporters.
