Australian federal government has launched National plastic plan, seeks to tackle plastic pollution in many different regions. According to the government, the plan will aim to ban disposable plastic on beaches, end extensive polystyrene packaging, and introduce micro-plastic filters for washing machines. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the plan is that the government intends to put the end to biodegradable plastic. Most countries that plan to minimize plastic pollution tend to tolerate biodegradable plastic products. But experts have warned that biodegradable plastic is no better than any conventional plastic plastic.

The term “biodegradable plastic” is used to refer to plastic that is derived from plant-based materials and is believed to be biodegradable after use. It is also commonly referred to as a bio-resin. While some people may think biodegradable is good, there are no standards that specify what types of products can be labeled as biodegradable. Some of these products may take decades or centuries in the past Landfills before breaking.
The recently announced plan aims to bring together companies in the industry to create a method of solving the problem. Implementing it will lead to the gradual elimination of “fragile” plastic by July 2022.
Another area of interest for the Australian government is recyclable plastic. Many companies manufacture plastics in bulk and label them recyclable. The problem is that only 18% of plastic in Australia is recycled while only 9% of plastic is recycled globally. Plastic recycling is still a challenging process. Firstly, Recycling It is very costly compared to making new plastics from fossil fuels. Therefore, most companies prefer to invest in fresh plastic.
In AustraliaThe recycling system is well-developed, but it faces challenges of cost and waste segregation at residential levels.
The National Plastics Plan will also seek to address it can be annealed plastic. The Australian Government already has regulatory and certification standards for this plastic. Unfortunately, most standards only apply to plastics that can be annealed in industrial facilities. The plan hopes to help recover more plastic through methods such as composting, but the government has yet to figure out how it will support specialized composting and collection systems.
