The discarded tombstone discovered on the empty lot raises questions at Paramus – CBS New York

PARAMUS, NJ (CBSNewYork) – A disturbing sight is turning his head around Paramuswhere a driver discovered an abandoned tombstone right by the side of the road.

Along the crowded Soldier Hill, countless cars passed a sea of tombstones at the Garden of Memories cemetery.

But across the street, a stone caught Joe Schrader’s eye.

It’s hard to miss, at least five feet tall and abandoned on a pile of debris.

Schrader told CBS2’s Nick Caloway: “Get out of the truck, run over there, and sure enough there’s a guy’s name written on it.

The name on the rock is Jack Katz. He appears to have died in 1937 at the age of 37, but where is Katz buried, and whether his grave is missing is difficult to tell.

Stone has been lying on the vacant lot since the land was cleared earlier this year to build an apartment building.

One manager of the construction company, Onekey, LLC, did not speak to CBS2 via camera but said the company bought the property from the cemetery across the street nearly 20 years ago.

He said before, it was used as a landfill and he believed there were no tombs on the ground.

So where does the rock come from?

Caloway phoned his office at the Garden of Memories cemetery during business hours, but staff won’t connect him with the manager and ask him to call back on Monday.

Currently, the stone is still lying on that pile of rubble, ignored by most people but still visible to the world.

“If that happens to, say, my father’s grave, it’s not possible,” Schrader said.

After losing his father as a child, this scene saddened Schrader.

“Just to be cast aside and forgotten like that. What does it say below? ‘Go but don’t forget.’ He’s forgotten, ”he said.

He said he hopes it is just a discarded tombstone and not an underrated grave.

The Paramus mayor said he was ignorant of the matter. He told CBS2 he hoped it was just a discarded stone from the cemetery across the street.
