The selfless Colorado woman donates both her kidneys and some of her liver to strangers – CBS New York

DENVER (CBS4) – In 2018, 69% of Coloradans said “Yes” to organ donation on their driver’s license. That makes Colorado top in the country for highest donor designation, but there are also people here willing to become living sponsors.

April is Donor Awareness Month and CBS4 Health Specialist Kathy Walsh met a woman who has donated both a kidney and a portion of her liver to strangers.

Angela Zivkovich, 41, is a policy consultant for an energy company and one of the most selfless people you’ll ever meet.

“Back in 2016, I was watching an interview of a man looking for a kidney,” says Angela.

Angela is looking for ways to help others.

“For me, it doesn’t matter if I know them or not. It is giving someone a chance to lead a healthy and fulfilling life. “

So in 2017, she began the organ donation process at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital. That summer she was traveling and hiking. That September, at the age of 37, Angela gave a kidney to a stranger in Georgia, a mother who thanked her.

Angela readily read aloud part of the letter: “I went through 3 long years of dialysis before you changed my life. You have helped my precious daughters to see the value of human kindness and hope ”.

You would think Angela did enough. But at a donation event a year later, she learned she could also donate some of her liver.

“My mother gave me a leaner view of” Don’t think about it, “Angela laughed.

But she did, and in June 2019, at the age of 39, she gave some of her liver to a Colorado woman.

“It’s really phenomenal,” said Dr. Elizabeth Pomfret, Head of Implant Surgery at UCHealth.

She said 20 people have been an undirected sponsor there since 2016. Angela is one of 12 people who have done it twice.

“The spirit of the people who live in Colorado is just one of these very gifted natures,” Pomfret said.

What Angela gets is the joy of knowing a mother in Georgia and Raynette, who receives her liver, is thriving.
