You are cleaning up too much. Here’s what to do about it

Iit is not easy for confusion to get out of control. As you spend more time at home, you may feel like you are constantly taking care of yourself. And while keeping a clean home can help you feel more comfortable and organized, Melissa Maker, organizer CleanMySpace YouTube channel, say you’re probably cleaning up too much.

“We’re more at home, so we’re cleaning up more, there’s no way to get around,” said Maker, the founder of Toronto-based cleaning company. Clean up my space. “It’s inevitable. We’re using more of our space more often and in more ways. It gets messy faster faster. I can tell you from my own experience, my husband and I regularly clean the house, kitchen. Sometimes it’s annoying because we take the time to clean it that looks nice and then the next day, half of the Cheerios bowl is lying on the floor, the counter is a mess. It is just daily work that must be maintained because the house is being used in a different way from what it was a year ago. “

If you feel like you’re constantly cleaning your house and that overwhelms you, Maker says the first step is stop thinking too much it.

“If you’re worried about, ‘Oh my God, I didn’t clean enough, I didn’t do it perfectly,’ then it only takes up mental energy and head space. “Nobody comes to my house, I have no one to be impressed with, I just have to keep the status quo of my house to make my family feel comfortable”.

And just because you’re at home more doesn’t mean your home needs to be the most tidy it ever has.

“I don’t currently take on any additional cleanup projects,” says Maker. “No, not the time to rethink my basement or anything like that. I’m just focusing on what to do today to keep my home healthy, happy and happy function. Everything else can be waited until later ”.

If you’re someone who always cleans up at work, Maker says that’s a good thing. It saves you from facing a mess later on. But sometimes, it’s impractical to clean up as you go.

“My living room is now full of toys and some laundry has to be folded. I have this extraordinary ability to see the past a mess, and just keep doing what I need to do and not care about, ”says Maker. “I know what to do today and it really doesn’t make sense when I have to clean up where to go because it will take so long. So on a day like today, I’ll leave everything behind, and then after my daughter goes to bed, me and my husband will probably gather for about half an hour each, and do our best. possible during that time. “

The best thing you can do is find an approach to cleaning that won’t leave you feeling exhausted and overwhelmed. “[A daily cleaning routine] Maker isn’t something so prescriptive because people are very different in their needs and their homes are also different, ”says Maker. “We should only do as much cleaning as we need to so that we feel as happy, healthy and comfortable as we are at home.”
