Zibanejad scored late, Rangers finished the winning capital 7 – CBS New York

WASHINGTON (AP) – Mika Zibanejad scored the lead with 2:32 left, Keith Kinkaid made 28 saves and New York Ranger defeat Washington Capital 3-1 Saturday night to break NHL’s longest streak of victories in seventh place.

New York won three-quarters over Washington leading the East Division this season. Rangers took the lead for most of the game on Friday night before losing with two late goals from Alex Ovechkin.

It looked like a similar formula on Friday after Pavel Buchnevich gave Rangers the lead at the end of the first phase with his 11th goal of the season after a perfect pass from defender Adam Fox. John Carlson forced it into a rebound with 14:05 remaining, and Capitals threatened a game of strength.

“I’m really worried about confidence,” Rangers rights coach Kris Knoblauch, who filled in for the third consecutive match with David Quinn and his staff in the tournament’s COVID protocol. “It could easily be ‘Oh, let’s move on.’ But everyone was positive, especially the leaders who were talking and just wanted to make sure we got this done. I don’t think there is any panic ”.

Kinkaid kept Rangers in the game, and Zibanejad won it off almost with just one hand. He hunted down Capitals defender Brenden Dillon in the strike zone, stole the bullet and shot down Ilya Samsonov.

“It has been a difficult recovery,” said Capitals coach Peter Laviolette. “It was a difficult vacation. Dilly is very nice to us. It was just one of those bounces that didn’t go our way. We will get over it. “

Zibanejad’s goal was his seventh of the season after a difficult start.

“I feel like myself again,” said Zibanejad. “It’s great that you can give an honest dedication. That’s what to expect from me. “

Brett Howden scored an empty net with just 28 seconds left, leaving Washington losing its first match since March 5 in Boston.

“Every loss is disappointing,” said Evgeny Kuznetsov, the Capitals center. “We are trying to build momentum. We’re trying to build the spirit that it’s very difficult to play against us, so of course it’s very disappointing.

Kinkaid, Rangers’ third scorer, got his second win of the season a week after knocking out Boston Bruins. He and Alexandar Georgiev continued to alternate with Igor Shesterkin still playing with a stretch of groin muscle.

“I don’t want to stop here,” said Kinkaid. “I want to continue.”

Ovechkin went down the tunnel followed by a mid-second coach and skated a few times while stopping as if he were trying to loosen something. The Capitals captain is back in action and appears to be rolling something on the back of his right leg while sitting on the bench in the middle of the shift.

Despite all that, Ovechkin played 22:56, the most of the strikers in the game.

1st choice Alexis Lafrenière skating at 07:53 season low in 14 shifts. Knoblauch blamed himself.

“Maybe it was poor bench management and not realizing the situation,” he said. “I wanted to keep him out of their top roster. But beyond that, I wish I would play with him more. It was just that they had the last change of person, there were so many encounters in the D zone for us and only unfortunately he missed out on some shifts. “

Washington brought winger Tom Wilson back after serving a five-match suspension but was still absent from the third line, Lars Eller due to a lower body injury. Eller missed the fourth consecutive match.

Without Eller, TJ Oshie started the game in central, a position he played earlier this season when the Capital was absent from Eller and Kuznetsov.

Rangers defender Jack Johnson has undergone major muscle repair surgery and will be sidelined for the remainder of the season. Johnson hasn’t played since 9 March and is limited to one goal – that match – in 13 against Rangers this season after being bought off by Pittsburgh.

Rangers: Return home to face Buffalo Sabers’ final position on Monday.

Capitalization: Take a few days to rest before hosting the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night in the first half of a fighting match.
